About
he Aravalli region of southern Rajasthan is characterized by rugged, rocky terrain where rainwater runoff is high and groundwater recharge is extremely limited. As a result, farmers face chronic water scarcity, low agricultural productivity, and declining soil quality. Small and fragmented landholdings further worsen the situation, making farming economically unviable for many households. Due to these challenges, large-scale migration has become common, affecting access to government welfare schemes and disrupting children’s education. To address these issues, Apna Sansthan has been working since 1995 in two blocks of Udaipur district, covering 25 villages. With the support of national and international partners, the organization has implemented a comprehensive watershed development program focusing on water conservation, soil management, and livelihood improvement. The project combines traditional knowledge with scientific techniques such as bunding, gully plugging, check dams, and small water harvesting structures to restore ecological balance.
